Cost = broker commission + currency conversion when the stock is not quoted in euros (IBKR as in comisiones.py: market minimum + currency conversion; Trade Republic no published FX fee (per-currency spread); Trading 212 0.15% FX fee; DEGIRO 0.25% AutoFX; Freedom24 at platform rate, not included). Assumes a €50 share bought in whole shares; IBKR Tiered plan except Spain (Fixed). Green = cheapest in each row.
* Purchase tax (Spain ITF 0.2%, France FTT 0.4%, UK stamp duty 0.5%; large caps only): charged by the state and identical at every broker, hence shown separately. USD/GBP minimums converted at 0.86 €/USD and 1.16 €/GBP.

How to read the table

  • €200 orders: inside the euro the cheapest is Trading 212 (0.00 € per trade); in dollars and pounds, Trading 212 (0.30 €). Interactive Brokers, the portfolio's broker, costs 2.60 € in the US at this size.
  • €1,000 orders: inside the euro the cheapest is Trading 212 (0.00 € per trade); in dollars and pounds, Trading 212 (1.50 €). Interactive Brokers, the portfolio's broker, costs 2.68 € in the US at this size.
  • Spain: the expensive market at IBKR (3.00 € minimum, no Tiered plan). If you mainly buy IBEX names, Trading 212 (0.00 €) saves you 3.00 € per order.
  • What the table doesn't measure: custody (DEGIRO charges €2.50/year per foreign exchange used), interest on cash, fractional shares, execution quality (a German venue for US stocks outside Wall Street hours has wider spreads) and how easy the app is.

Where your money is

Which entity holds your account, where it is regulated and what the compensation scheme pays back if it fails. Your shares are yours and segregated in every case: the scheme covers what would be missing if the broker had lost them or could not return them. Uninvested cash is what varies most between brokers.

Method and sources

Interactive Brokers costs are computed by comisiones.py, the module Meridian's portfolio uses to decide whether a rotation pays off (fees verified on IBKR Ireland's site). The others come from each broker's public fee schedule on its official website, checked septiembre 2026. Spotted an error? Write to info@meridianscreener.com and we'll fix it.

Meridian's own portfolio runs on Interactive Brokers with orders of about €1,000, but plenty of investors buy €200 at a time. At that size the cost is driven not by the percentage but by the minimum per trade: a €3 minimum on a €200 order is 1.5% you must earn back before making anything. That is why the comparison runs at both sizes: what it really costs to buy one stock on each market with the brokers most used from Spain and the euro area.

Disclosure. Some links on this page may be affiliate links: if you open an account through them, Meridian receives a commission from the broker at no extra cost to you. That does not change the figures (they come from public fee schedules and from the same cost module the portfolio uses) or the order of the tables. A broker marked «Featured» appears first among the cards above and its button carries an affiliate link. None of this is investment advice; prices may change without notice — always confirm on the broker's site.
