What it is

Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, created in 2009. It works without a central bank and its supply is capped at 21 million units; roughly every four years the amount of new coins created is halved (the “halving”).

What moves it

Risk appetite (it tends to move with the Nasdaq, but far more sharply), interest rates, regulation, big investors coming in through listed funds and the halving cycles. It is very volatile: it has fallen by more than 70%.

Notice on crypto-assets

Crypto-assets are highly volatile, may not be suitable for retail investors and you can lose everything you invest. Their price has none of the protection of regulated financial products. MeridIAn Screener does not offer or promote buying them.

Frequently asked questions

Why is bitcoin so volatile?

It has no earnings or cash flows to value it: its price depends only on what others are willing to pay.

What is the “halving”?

The halving, roughly every four years, of the new bitcoins created.

Is it regulated?

In the EU, the MiCA regulation covers firms providing crypto-asset services, but it does not protect you from price risk.
