What it is
It is the price of one euro in dollars: at 1.10, a euro is worth 1.10 dollars. It is the most traded currency pair in the world and changes what a euro-based investor earns on US stocks or funds.
What moves it
The gap between ECB and Federal Reserve interest rates, growth in each economy, inflation and risk appetite: in a crisis the dollar usually acts as a safe haven.
