What it is
The S&P 500 brings together about 500 of the largest US listed companies, around 80% of the value of the US stock market. Each one is weighted by market value, so Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia or Amazon drive a large share of the index. It is published in points and without dividends.
What moves it
Company earnings, Federal Reserve interest rates and expectations for US economic growth. In euros, also the euro/dollar.
How to invest
Through an ETF tracking the S&P 500; some trade in euros and reinvest dividends.

Does the S&P 500 include dividends?
No: the index in points only tracks prices. With dividends reinvested the return is 1 to 2 points higher a year.
What is the difference between the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones?
The Dow Jones has just 30 companies weighted by share price; the S&P 500 has 500 weighted by market value.
Why does it change in euros when it does not move in dollars?
Because its value in euros also depends on the exchange rate: if the dollar rises it goes up, if it falls it goes down.
